  • Embed: quote from and/or embed site data in documents, slide presentations, or other media not designed for ongoing display on the Internet.

So long as you comply with all of the other terms below:

  • Attribution: You must give appropriate credit and provide a link to the site (see below). You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests The People Say or its developers endorse you or your use.

  • NonCommercial: You may not use the material for any commercial purposes. Commercial purposes include, but are not limited to, selling, promoting, or developing any product or services for financial or other gain.

  • NoCopy: You may not repost or redistribute the material, except as a link to the original material on this site and in the context of fair use for commentary, research, teaching, etc., without explicit written permission (see below).

  • NoDerivatives: You may not remix, transform, or build upon the material, without explicit written permission (see below).

Background to These Terms

Research participants whose data is shared on The People Say generously offered their time and candidly shared about their lives and expertise. All participants agreed to having their content shared on this public online platform. If a participant’s voice and face are identifiable, they consented explicitly to the sharing of that personally identifying information. 

As researchers, we respect and affirm that generosity, and we seek to protect their data and likenesses from being used in ways to which they have not consented. Participants did not consent to any commercial use for their data or likeness, nor did they agree to uses other than as expressly stated and permitted on this site.

Note that while the terms above are modeled on a CC BY-NC-ND Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs license, we have made significant alterations to the license language. This is no longer a standard Creative Commons license and should not be understood as such.

Permission for Other Uses

You must contact us to discuss terms and obtain express written permission if you wish to do any of the following:

  • Make use of any audio, video, or textual data presented on The People Say for commercial purposes of any kind (in whole or in part).

  • Make any modifications to audio, video, or textual data as it is presented on The People Say.

  • Edit audio, video, or textual data presented on The People Say.

  • Contact research participants.

Any use not expressly permitted is prohibited, and we reserve all rights not expressly granted. If your use is not clearly permitted or questionable, please contact us for further written permission.

Additional Terms

  • All registration and other information you provide us must be true and complete.
  • You agree that if we reasonably determine your use of any audio, video, or textual data is not authorized under these terms or otherwise inappropriate (e.g., due to complaints by research participants or otherwise), you will use reasonable efforts to cease doing so and reasonably address the situation to the extent possible, without limiting our other rights and remedies.
  • You also agree we may suspend or terminate your rights at any time. 
  • We may modify these terms by posting revised terms on the site or email notification to you, so please check the site and your email regularly. Modified terms will be effective only for uses after such modification is posted or made known to you.
